Blood of Zeus, formerly known as Gods & Heroes, is an American adult animated television series created by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides for Netflix. Produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, the series was released on October 27, 2020 on Netflix. In early December 2020, a second season was greenlit by Netflix.

Set in the world of Greek mythology, the series revolves around Heron, the demigod son of Zeus, trying to save Olympus and Earth. Though Heron himself is a character created for the show, the existence of such demigods born of the union between a god and a human is implied to be common in the original myths. The show claims in its prologue to be one of the tales ‘lost to history’ rather than passed down with our current canon of Greek myths. The show features gods, giants, automata, and mythical mounts from the original tales.

Daniel Kurland Den of Geek

“Blood of Zeus is a striking and fun experience.”

Nick Valdez

“Blood of Zeus is a work of art. With their signature style of hyper-violence and pure beauty, Powerhouse Animation has delivered a series with some amazing monsters, magic, action sequences, and above all – as usual – gorgeous characters.”

Kate Sanchez But Why Tho?

“Blood of Zeus is easily one of the best series of the year - it entwines Greek mythology with anime while enjoying that alternative feel.”

Daniel Hart Ready steady Cut

“That the creators and showrunners, Charles and Vlas Parlapanides are of Greek descent speak volumes to the attention to details. The rites, rituals, enunciations of names, places, and things in the world, the designs of the pantheon. All of these add a layer of authenticity that forces Blood of Zeus to stand out and stand apart from the multitude of media that sources Greek mythology.”

Light is an extremely brilliant but bored high-school student. In Seattle, Washington, high schooler Light stumbles across the “Death Note”, a mysterious leather-bound notebook with instructions that state that by writing a person’s name down within it, that person will die in the manner prescribed. Light then meets the death god Ryuk, the notebook’s owner. Ryuk convinces Light to use the notebook; Light writes down a bully’s name and shortly witnesses him killed in a freak accident. That night, Light tries it again, using the name of his mother’s killer, Anthony Skomal, and learns the next morning from his father James, a police detective, that Skomal died as Light had written. At school, Light shows Mia the book, and demonstrates it by killing a known criminal felon during a televised hostage situation. The two decide to work together to rid the world of criminals and terrorists, using the name “Kira” (derived from the Japanese trans-literation for “Killer”, so as direct investigative attention away from their continent).
With the Death Note in hand, he goes on a personal crusade and moves to kill all evil in the world and become God. He does this all in his new name, Kira, and declares himself the law and justice of the world. At first, things go as he planned, and he moves toward making a ‘better’ world. However, things don’t go as he had anticipated…
